Enter the Alaska Statewide Youth Art & Writing Competition

 

Are you a young Alaska artist or writer? Submit your work to the Alaska Statewide Youth Art & Writing Competition!

The ASYAWC is a great opportunity for youth to express themselves without censorship, experience what their peers around the state are doing and give communities the opportunity to rally around youth and art.

Finalists will have their work curated in a gallery or published in F Magazine. UAA Dance Ensemble in Concert

 

The 2013 “Dance Ensemble in Concert” event showcases the eight-member UAA Dance Ensemble, joined in performance by Dance Ensemble alumni, Nov. 15, 16, 22 and 23 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 17 and 24 at 6 p.m. at the UAA Fine Arts Building. The performance will feature original choreography in a unique collaboration by seven choreographers. Tickets are $14. For more information, call the UAA Box Office at 786-4TIX.

The Soroptimist International Violet Richardson Award

 

Are you a young woman between the ages of 14 and 17 who volunteers in your community or school? The Soroptimist International Violet Richardson Award recognizes young women who make their community and the world a better place through their volunteer efforts. Actions that benefit women or girls are of particular interest.

Soroptimist International of Anchorage will be giving awards of $1,000. Half will go to the girl, and the other half will go to the girl’s volunteer organization. Local winners then become eligible for additional awards.

Free Snowshoeing Class @ REI

 

Are you looking for a fun winter sport? Join the experienced REI staff for a FREE class on the basics of snowshoeing, tonight (Thursday) at 6 p.m. They will focus on the appropriate selection of gear as well as the basics on what you need and where to go to get started. If you ever thought about getting into snowshoeing, this is a great introduction to the sport!

Japanese Jazz @ UAA

 

Jazz from Japan! Instrumental jazz phenomenon Ai Kuwabara Trio Project makes their American debut Wednesday, Nov. 20 at the UAA Fine Arts Building at 7:30 p.m.  Led by 22-year-old piano prodigy Ai Kuwabara, this band has stolen the attention of the entire jazz community in Japan. The band’s music is urban contemporary jazz with a strong, experimental feel and a flavor of funk. Don’t miss this one-time chance to hear unique, awesome music! This concert is FREE!

Youth Free Expression Film Contest

Submit your short film to the annual Youth Free Expression Film Contest and you could win a cash prize and an all-expenses paid trip to New York City to take classes at the New York Film Academy. This year’s topic is “Video Games in the Crosshairs.” Create a short film about gaming, media violence and the threat of censorship.  You must be 19 or younger and the film must be under four minutes. Volunteer for Catholic Social Service’s Thanksgiving Blessing

 

Catholic Social Services will be distributing food for Thanksgiving at St. Patrick’s Parish November 25th. This year, they are expecting 1,400 families. They will need a lot of help from community members. Help out by being a personal shopper and by keeping the shopping area clean.
