Disney’s Friends for Change Grants offer young change-makers an opportunity to receive a $500 grant to help make a lasting, positive change in the world. Whether you are passionate about protecting the planet, providing meals to those who need them, or giving kids just like you the resources they need to star in their own play, you can be a Friend for Change!

Applicants leading high-impact and/or large-scale projects may also request an additional $500 grant (up to $1,000, total) to support their work.

Come to the Loussac Library, Thursday, January 16 for Q-Club, Anchorage’s LGBTQ teen hangout group. They’ll be meeting to share coming-out stories to parents and families from 6-8 p.m. Snacks will be provided.

The Anchorage Suicide Prevention Coalition needs a logo and a positive, uplifting slogan. They are looking for submissions from Anchorage high school students. Discover how you can train for an endurance run/walk event and raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society with Team In Training. Come to a free, one-hour information meeting Thursday, Jan 16, at 6 p.m. at REI to learn how TNT’s expert coaches will prepare you to run or walk the Mayor’s Marathon and Half Marathon (Anchorage – June 21), the Rock ‘n’ Roll Seattle Marathon & 1/2 Marathon (June 21), or the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon & 1/2 Marathon (June 1).

Do you knit, crochet or sew? Put your crafty skills to good work and donate scarves, gloves, mittens or hats to Project Homeless Connect, which takes place January 25 at the Egan Center.

RAHI – Rural Alaska Honors Institute is now accepting applications for the 2014 summer program.

RAHI is a six-week academic summer program for rural and Alaska Native students. The program provides high school juniors and seniors with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the college experience by living in the dorms at University of Alaska Fairbanks and taking college level courses.

Students earn 8 -10 credits and learn first-hand what it takes to succeed in college. Courses include English, College Algebra, Business, Chemistry, Biology, Archaeology, Process Technology, Alaska Native Dance and Karate.

There is no cost for selected students and travel costs are included! The dates are May 27 to July 11, 2014.

Get inspired to make your best-ever science fair project. Learn about the scientific method and take the first step toward a world of opportunities in science.

Come out and meet Anchorage board game enthusiasts and have some fun every other Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Loussac Library.

This is the group in Anchorage for people interested in playing contemporary/modern board games, from people who are new and interested in the hobby to those that don’t mind burning hours on an epic game of Twilight Imperium. They play a mix of the modern classics and hot things right off the gaming press.

Anchorage residents are invited to share their ideas, concerns, and experiences with Anchorage-area legislators in the Alaska State House and Senate this Saturday, January 11, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Loussac Library for a special Anchorage Legislative Caucus.

Anchorage Education Association encourages students to stand up for their educational rights. Attend the meeting and wear white to shine a light on education.
