This Friday is Winter Bike to Work Day. This event is a multi-city effort to encourage winter biking.

Register anytime before the 14th and show your friends that you are a serious Alaska biker! Registration is free and easy at http://winterbiketoworkday.org/commit/.

Then head to Westchester Lagoon from 4:30-6 pm. to celebrate your winter biking know-how with free cookies and hot cocoa.

Attention ice fishers! If you’re between the ages of 12 and 15 then you’re eligible to enter the Matsu Kids Ice Fishing Derby Sunday, Feb 23. Prizes and trophies will be given to the three largest fish. Don’t have a pole? They’ll be giving prizes to the best homemade fishing poles!

So head out to Finger Lake in Palmer. Registration opens at 9 a.m. at Palmer Elks Lodge. The youth derby is FREE to join!

Learn how to dress for cold weather, places to snowshoe, and enjoy hot chocolate to warm up! This event is FREE and open to the public.

Every Friday is Family Gym Night at The Salvation Army Anchorage Corps & Community Center from 6-8 p.m. Family Gym Night is open for all ages of children and families to shoot hoops, volleyball, pool table, dodgeball, air hockey, and board games. Occassional family nights will be family movies and popcorn. Free to families with children under 18.

Ski and raise money for a good cause! There will be an informal ski race Friday, Jan. 3, at the Beach Lake Trails Chalet in Chugiak to raise money for Catholic Social Services-Anchorage, AK’s Brother Francis Shelter. Show your support and donate what you can. The race starts at 11 a.m.

Prizes will be given to the top three skiers in each age group.

If you’ve ever been interested in the sport of curling, then now’s your chance to learn from a pro! Meet two time Olympian curler, Jessica Schultz, during a drop-in Learn to Curl Clinic. Stop in from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22 at the Anchorage Curling Club. Plan on an hour for the lesson and on-ice practice. Hand carry in a pair of clean tennis shoes to wear on the ice, and dress in warm loose fitting clothing, hat and gloves.
