Young Emerging Artists, Inc. is sponsoring the Alaska Region of this year’s Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Students in grades 7-12 can apply in 28 categories of art and writing for their chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited or published. Students can earn scholarships from $250 a semester to full college tuition!

Submit anything creative from jewelry to video game design to sculpture. Submissions are judged on originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal vision or voice.

If you are interested in a career in public service and education, consider applying for the Nick Begich Scholarship Intern Fund for the 2014/15 school year.

The Fund was created in 1977 to carry on the ideals of the late Alaska Congressman Nick Begich who believed that education was both a right and a privilege, one that must be available to all. The highest scoring applicant is awarded the Eugene A. Kennedy Award, which is a $2,000 annual award renewable for up to a full four years.

Submit to the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

CSPAN’s StudentCam Competition

Are you interested in film making? Enter the CSPAN StudentCam Competition and be eligible for scholarships and video equipment!
StudentCam is an annual national video documentary competition that encourages students to think critically about issues that affect our communities and our nation, sponsored by C-SPAN.
StudentCam’s theme for 2014 is:  “A Message to the U.S. Congress: What’s the most important issue the U.S. Congress should consider in 2014?” Maximum award: $5,000, plus $750 to spend on digital video equipment for his/her school. Eligibility: students grades 6-12, individually or in teams

Donate jeans for the “Teens for Jeans” campaign

 

Have some old jeans lying around in your closet? Drop them off at the Aéropostale store in the Dimond Center and your jeans will go to homeless youth around the nation as part of DoSomething.org’s “Teens for Jeans” campaign.

This year, Fairbanks Youth Advocates have been selected as a “Teens for Jeans” recipient so you know your jeans are going to a local cause!

Not only are you helping your community, but you’ll receive an Aéropostale coupon for every pair of jeans you donate. Participating teens are also eligible for a $4000 scholarship and local schools could win a $10,000 grant.

The Soroptimist International Violet Richardson Award

 

Are you a young woman between the ages of 14 and 17 who volunteers in your community or school? The Soroptimist International Violet Richardson Award recognizes young women who make their community and the world a better place through their volunteer efforts. Actions that benefit women or girls are of particular interest.

Soroptimist International of Anchorage will be giving awards of $1,000. Half will go to the girl, and the other half will go to the girl’s volunteer organization. Local winners then become eligible for additional awards.
