YWCA Alaska offers a safe place to learn and practice self-defense the first Thursday of every month. Teens 13-18 are invited to learn Senshido self defense tonight from 6-8 p.m. The cost is $10-15.

Work alongside field organizers and learn skills in recruiting, training and maintaining a volunteer base that will educate, register and turn out voters on Election Day. Class credit can be made available.

Kick off for the Midsummer Night Science Series at the Campbell Creek Science Center Wednesday, May 28 with a family bear safety class. Come learn about bear behavior and how to recreate safely in bear country. Try out your new skills with inert bear spray practice. This event is FREE and open to the public. Workshop is from 7-8 p.m.

REI is holding a free bike maintenance for women class Wednesday, May 21 at 6 p.m. This class is an informative presentation that will teach you how to lube a chain, fix a flat tire in record time, and make other minor adjustments to your bicycle. No experience necessary!

Join the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension for a pickling class, Wednesday May 21 from 5:30-9:30 p.m. at Viking Hall.

Move beyond traditional pickling cucumbers and explore the variety of vegetables and fruits that can be pickled and stored. Home fermentation for making sauerkraut will also be covered. Tuition is $25.

Preregistration is required. Online registration is available up until 5 p.m. the day before the class.
