Winning designs will be used as part of a postcard advertising campaign to raise the profile of their Sister Cities program and to increase community awareness of the existing international partnerships.

Attention filmmakers! Show off your skills and love for the ocean by entering the Alaska Ocean Observing System’s film contest. You could win $1,000! Submit at film about any genre relating to the ocean, such as people using the ocean and coast, marine research, marine wildlife and ocean-related policy issues. Films must be 10 minutes or less. You don’t need to be a professional to submit a film!

Put your cupcakes to the challenge! It’s time for the first-ever Covenant House Alaska Cupcake Competition, May 23 from 1-2 p.m. Submit 24 of your best cupcakes by 12:30 p.m. May 23. Covenant House youth will be judging based on taste, creativity and presentation. No store bought cupcakes will be accepted. Home made from scratch only.

Essay contest! What Kids Can Do (WKCD) and Next Generation Press are updating “Hip Deep: Opinion, Essays, and Vision from American Teenagers,” a book of nonfiction essays by youth across the country. They’re inviting youth, ages 13 to 19, to submit nonfiction essays (approximately 500 – 1,000 words) on a topic that you care about deeply. It could also be a speech you gave or an article you wrote (perhaps for your school newspaper)–something that made your friends and your teachers say, “Wow.” Winners will receive a $100 Amazon gift certificate. Nerd Art Show! Submit your best fan art to the Loussac Library’s Nerd Art Group Show in celebration of “May the 4th Be With You.”

Any and all local artists are invited to submit their work having to do with comics, manga, TV shows, movies, books, games, video games, animation, anime, toys and cartoons.

Artists should bring their artwork framed and ready to hang. Limit four pieces per person. Artwork can be dropped off May 1-4 and will be shown in the library for the whole month.
