Every Word. Every Line. Every Poet. Every Time! Brave New Alaskan Voices E.W.E.L.E.P.E.T. SLAM is coming to Anchorage City Limits Wednesday, Jan. 8 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

A Poetry SLAM is a performance/contest in which poets put their original works on display in a competitive venue. There are three rounds. Poems are scored on a 0-10 scale by a panel of five judges.

Winners will qualify to travel with BNAV to Quarterfinals in March.

Head to the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center this Saturday and Sunday as Alaska Native youth assist visitors and answer questions in the exhibition “Dena’inaq’ Huch’ulyeshi: The Dena’ina Way of Living,” the first major exhibition about the Dena’ina Athabascan people. This program is a collaboration with the Alaska Native Heritage Center and provides opportunities for youth to learn about and embrace cultural traditions and values.

Learn all about dyslexia at Bear Tooth’s Art House Monday January 6 at 5:30 p.m. as they present the film Dislecksia: The Movie.

Director Harvey Hubbell V explores issues surrounding dyslexia through a personal lens and weaves in scientific research, the practice of educators, the life experiences of celebrities, politicians, adults and children.

If you love science and film making, then you could be eligible for up to $2000 from the KAVLI Foundation Science in Fiction Video Contest.

Investigate how science is portrayed in TV, films, and games. Find an example using a film, TV show, or video game, then compare to what we can do today with current or emerging technologies.

Make a short video that shares your discoveries and states your case.

Ski and raise money for a good cause! There will be an informal ski race Friday, Jan. 3, at the Beach Lake Trails Chalet in Chugiak to raise money for Catholic Social Services-Anchorage, AK’s Brother Francis Shelter. Show your support and donate what you can. The race starts at 11 a.m.

Prizes will be given to the top three skiers in each age group.

Check out ice sculptors in action Friday, Jan. 3 at the Crystal Gallery of Ice competition in Town Square. Ice carvers start at 9 a.m. and will work throughout the weekend. Their projects must be completed by 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5th.
